Roma manager Jose Mourinho believes their 1-1 draw against Milan was ‘unfair’ given the way they played and the ‘difficulties’ they face. The Giallorossi boss was speaking to DAZN (as quoted by RomaPress) after the match, and reflected on a difficult evening that saw their crisis worsen when Andrea Belotti and Marash Kumbulla were taken off with injuries, leaving them without the services of at least five first-team players:
“From the point of view of our performance, the result is unfair. Only we can play a match against Milan in this way with all the difficulties we have.”
“We are not rich, every player who gets injured is a big problem with us, we have lost many at this time of the year. Reaching the Champions League would be an incredible achievement, only we could fight like this.”
“I’m more proud than sad tonight. I’m still sad because the three points seemed very close.
“There are coaches that pick and choose how to play. We can’t do that. We have to play with what we have available. These guys are fantastic, we have to give everything so we can to stay in this position in the standings.”
“Overall, I’m a very proud manager tonight. We dropped two key points.
“I doubt we’ll see Karsdorp and Llorente back on the pitch this season, Kumbulla is 100% out for the remainder of the season.”
“We hope to get Smalling back, let’s see in one or two games if possible. Wijnaldum is close to returning, I don’t know about Dybala. He was on the bench today and could not play. Even if Milan had scored, we wouldn’t have put him on the field.”
“Matic is disqualified against Monza, but let’s move on. I coached many years with squads with 1,000 options, now I get to be with an amazing group of guys, I’m super proud to work with them.”
“Belotti left the pitch but he couldn’t breathe, on the stairs before returning he raised the white flag, it was impossible to continue. He may have broken a rib.”
