Motta: “The hardest thing for me is not letting others play”

Thiago Motta believes Bologna deserved their 1-0 victory over Empoli, and explained how hard it is to allow everyone to get playing time. The Rossoblu find themselves closing in on Champions League football after Giovanni Fabbian scored a late winner against Gli Azzurri, giving them a 6 point advantage over Empoli.

Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Motta began his analysis by acknowledging the players’ efforts, emphasizing their commitment to the team’s cause. However, he shed light on the dilemma every coach faces – the challenge of not being able to field every player, stating, “The most difficult thing for me is not letting others play, those who remain on the bench. We cannot play all starters, but we try to be fair and just with them.”

Reflecting on the match, Motta asserted Bologna’s deserved victory: “We deserved the victory because we could have taken the lead earlier,’ he continued. ‘Teams with great character. The boys believed in it until the end, we did it for our fans and our environment.”

Discussing Calafiori, Motta expressed confidence in the player’s abilities, noting his physical and technical attributes, coupled with his fearlessness in taking risks, “For his physical and technical characteristics, he can do many things. He has courage and is not afraid to make mistakes.”

In his final remarks on team organization, Motta emphasized the importance of collective play and on-field decision-making: “We are very organized, but then decisions have to be made on the field. These are things that cannot be trained and come from them. We need to play collectively, from the outside I try to help, but the compliments go to the boys.”
