Luciano Moggi, former sporting director of Juventus, has shared his thoughts on the current state of the club and Italian football in general. In an interview with TuttomercatoWeb.com, Moggi offered insights on Juventus, the Serie A title race, and other top teams.
Regarding Juventus, Moggi emphasized the need for patience: “They should be evaluated with a long-term perspective because it’s a group made up of young players who need time to grow. They’re not ready to win today, but they can emerge in the future because there are very good players. You don’t build things in a year, but things are going fairly well.”
When asked about Thiago Motta’s work at Juventus, Moggi expressed approval: “If the team convinces me, he convinces me too. He’s had to deal with injuries, the one that happened to Bremer is no joke, now there’s been another… They need to keep going like this, thinking about being competitive at all levels in a couple of years, and I think they can do it. Giuntoli has done a good job.”
On the Serie A title race, Moggi believes it’s between Inter and Napoli, with a nod to Atalanta’s unique approach: “Yes, there would be Atalanta, but they sometimes prioritize different decisions. They’re fortunate to have a coach who’s a safe bet and allows them to sell players well, make money, and then surpass those who buy them.”
Moggi also commented on the recent controversies involving Conte, De Laurentiis, and Marotta, describing them as “the spice of football.” He added his thoughts on VAR: “My assessment of VAR is 70% positive, 30% negative.”
Regarding AC Milan’s struggles, Moggi pointed to formation issues and player positioning. He also touched on the Leao situation: “Leao, when he’s there, gives Milan a quality that they don’t have without him. The bench has given him a warning, he needs to be a serious professional.”
On Roma’s situation, Moggi was critical of the club’s management: “There’s a society that doesn’t exist, the problem isn’t Ranieri or other coaches. When you make a team with De Rossi, then send him away and take someone totally different from him like Juric… I don’t want to condemn him for what he couldn’t do, he’s used to playing with another team, the management didn’t understand that.”
