Milan’s contract renewal challenges: From Theo Hernandez and Calabria to Maignan

Start

AC Milan’s management faces several crucial tests to restore the club’s competitiveness both in Italy and Europe. The primary focus is on strengthening and lending credibility to the technical project under coach Fonseca, while simultaneously addressing the contract renewals of key players and making strategic acquisitions to enhance the squad’s depth and quality.

Calciomercato report how during the recent international break, the Theo Hernandez situation has been a hot topic. Manuel Garcia Quilon, Hernandez’s agent, claimed in an exclusive interview with Telelombardia that he hasn’t received any signals from the club regarding a renewal in five months. However, Milan maintains that the player has discussed the matter several times with Ibrahimovic and Moncada. Despite past misunderstandings, there’s still ample time to resolve the issue. Furlani is expected to soon invite Quilon for detailed discussions, with the new offer likely to be close to €6.5 million net per season, up from the current €4.5 million plus €500,000 in bonuses. Encouragingly, Quilon has reiterated Hernandez’s desire to extend his stay with the Rossoneri.

Regarding Mike Maignan, Milan has never doubted his exceptional technical and moral qualities. His return to top form this season has prompted the club to accelerate contract renewal negotiations. Maignan’s salary is set to double from €2.8 million to €5 million, with a four-year extension to his current contract, which expires in 2026.

Matteo Gabbia’s future with Milan seems secure, with the club deciding last summer to reward the Busto Arsizio-born defender with a contract renewal. Negotiations have entered the operational phase, with Gabbia expected to sign a new agreement worth about €2 million net per season, a significant increase from his current €800,000. The deal is likely to be finalized in early January, extending his contract until 2030.

The most urgent case, considering the July 2025 expiration, is that of Davide Calabria. Milan appears reluctant to open negotiations, despite the captain’s willingness to extend under current terms (€2.3 million per season). A departure seems likely, either in January or at the season’s end, raising questions about whether this decision is purely based on technical evaluations.
