AC Milan have reportedly made a bold move in the January transfer window, submitting a €35 million offer for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie De Jong. The Italian giants are looking to bolster their midfield options, with De Jong seen as a potential marquee signing to complement their current squad.
According to reports from El Nacional, Milan’s offer consists of a €25 million base fee with an additional €10 million in performance-related bonuses. However, Barcelona have rebuffed this initial approach, holding out for a minimum of €45 million for the Dutch international.
De Jong’s situation at Barcelona has become increasingly precarious under manager Hansi Flick. The 27-year-old has made just 16 appearances this season, with only five as a starter, leading to speculation about his future at the Camp Nou. Despite recent praise from Flick following a strong performance in a 5-1 Copa del Rey victory over Real Betis, De Jong’s long-term prospects at the club remain uncertain.
With his contract set to expire in June 2026, Barcelona may be open to cashing in on De Jong to create space in their squad and budget for new acquisitions. The Catalan club paid €85 million to sign him from Ajax in 2019, but his value has depreciated due to limited playing time and inconsistent form.
Milan’s technical director Paolo Moncada and CEO Giorgio Furlani are actively seeking reinforcements, with De Jong viewed as an ideal fit for manager Sérgio Conceição’s potential 4-2-3-1 formation. The Dutchman’s arrival could allow Tijani Reijnders to move into a more advanced role behind the striker.
While the gap between Milan’s offer and Barcelona’s valuation is significant, negotiations are expected to continue. De Jong’s addition would represent a statement of intent from Milan as they look to strengthen their squad for domestic and European competitions.
