AC Milan are looking to bolster their midfield options in the January transfer window, with the club’s management recognizing the need for additional support in this crucial area. Despite Youssouf Fofana’s impressive performances this season, the lack of rotation options and Ismael Bennacer’s injury have left the French midfielder overworked.
Calciomercato report how Fofana has played 1,140 minutes across 14 appearances, with little opportunity for rest. This heavy workload, combined with his international duties for France, has led to signs of fatigue. A clear example of this was seen in the match against Cagliari, where Fofana provided an assist for Leao but also made a costly error leading to Zappa’s goal.
Milan’s technical director Geoffrey Moncada and his team are already working on potential January signings. Their primary target is Morten Frendrup, a 23-year-old Danish midfielder currently playing for Genoa. Frendrup, who was also of interest to Napoli last summer, is being monitored by Premier League clubs Liverpool, Brentford, and Brighton. Genoa values Frendrup between €18-20 million, but their financial situation might make them open to negotiations.
Another name on Milan’s radar is Johnny Cardoso, a 23-year-old American midfielder from Real Betis. Cardoso has been available since the summer, with Betis looking to sell for around €25-30 million. A loan with an option to buy could be a potential formula for this deal. Cardoso’s Italian passport is an added advantage, as it wouldn’t occupy a non-EU slot in Milan’s squad.
The third candidate is Carney Chukwuemeka, a 21-year-old talent from Chelsea. Moncada is particularly keen on Chukwuemeka, and a loan with an option to buy could be explored. However, there are questions about his best position, as he’s more comfortable as a box-to-box midfielder rather than in a deeper role.
While Bennacer’s return from injury will provide some relief, Milan’s management believes additional reinforcement is necessary to maintain their competitive edge in both domestic and European competitions. The January transfer window will be crucial for the Rossoneri as they aim to strengthen their squad for the second half of the season.
