New Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay recently shared his thoughts on his move to Italy and his experience under Antonio Conte in an interview with Radio CRC, the club’s official radio station.
Comparing the Premier League and Serie A, McTominay noted significant differences: “Serie A is much more tactical. You need to understand your role within the team and with your teammates. Physically, both leagues are demanding, but the tactical work is more intense in Italy.”
On Conte’s coaching style, McTominay praised its flexibility: “Conte’s game is very flexible. You don’t play in just one position; you have to learn to do many things and absorb the right information to help your teammates achieve results. I feel very comfortable in the position the coach is playing me, it helps me reach the goals we set.”
Describing his preferred role, McTominay said, “I’ve played in more than one position on the field, but in midfield I’ve both attacked and defended as number 8s do tactically. I’ve had the chance to occupy more areas of the field, but always with the aim of helping my teammates.”
Regarding Napoli’s title chances, McTominay expressed confidence in the team’s progress: “We have a lot of confidence in the group. We look at the next game after each match and keep the good things we do behind us. We’re making progress, listening to the coach and staff, and doing what they ask of us.”
When asked about the strongest players he’s encountered, McTominay didn’t hesitate: “The physically strongest player I’ve played with is definitely Romelu Lukaku. Technically, it’s Kvaratskhelia – Khvicha is the most gifted. As an opponent, of course, Leo Messi.”
McTominay also touched on Neapolitan cuisine, admitting he hasn’t tried everything due to dietary restrictions, but promised to explore it carefully.
Finally, he praised the passion of Napoli fans: “Here I feel the passion of the people. We’re here to work and bring joy to the city. We must do our best to make them happy. The passion was crucial in my decision to accept Napoli.”
