The Mayor of Udinese has proposed the idea of offering Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan honorary citizenship following the racist abuse he suffered. The Rossoneri shop-stopper walked off the pitch in Milan’s 3-2 win over Udinese, informing the referee that he had heard racist chants from behind the goal.
Taking to Instagram, Alberto Felice De Toni insisted that his city was not racist but also floated the idea of reaching out to Maignan with the gesture of citizenship:
“Ours is a city for everyone: Udine is not racist. That is why I have personally invited Maignan to Udine to carry out, together with the Milan Foundation, concrete initiatives to combat discrimination. I will also propose to the city council to grant the goalkeeper honorary citizenship. Friuli is a welcoming land and Udinese Calcio has always been a multicultural and inclusive team. These values cannot be humiliated by people blinded by racism with gestures that we strongly condemn.”
