Former Inter defender Marco Materazzi has questioned Milan Skriniar’s decision to leave Inter for PSG: ‘He’s a very strong defender, but not the best.’ Skriniar is set to join the Ligue 1 champions elect in the summer after failing to agree a contract extension with the Nerazzurri, despite suggestions that the Slovakian international was keen to remain in Milan.
Speaking to Canal+ (as quoted by FCInter), Materazzi offered his own thoughts on the situation and explained why he believes the 28-year-old should remain with Inter:
“He is a very strong defender, but not the best. When he applies himself, he becomes strong in a collective context. We should not forget that when Skriniar arrived he played well, worked and had the merit of changing Conte’s mind. The first year with Conte he did not play, he could have left. He improved a lot, became indispensable and captain of Inter.
“I personally, in his place, would have stayed at Inter. I told him publicly, “Remember how the Inter fans loved you, I don’t know if you will be loved like that in Paris, I wish you that.” But just look at what happens with Messi, and he is one of the best players in history.”
