Inter President Beppe Marotta issued a strong response to AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale’s recent remarks, which criticized Inter’s financial management under Steven Zhang and referred to the club’s situation as a “bankruptcy.” Speaking to Sky Italia before Inter’s match against Como at San Siro, Marotta addressed the controversy head-on.
On Serie A Competitiveness
“I didn’t expect such competitiveness in our league. Compared to other European leagues, ours has always been more challenging. However, we are in a transitional phase where anything can happen.”
Responding to Cardinale
Marotta did not shy away from addressing Cardinale’s comments:
“I didn’t want to talk about this, but I feel it’s necessary to respond. These statements are out of place and disrespectful to the prestige and image of our club. I believe Cardinale is confused. It’s true that our majority shareholder faced financial difficulties in the past, but Oaktree stepped in two years ago and is now the owner of the club. Since then, we’ve established clear guidelines for managing Inter.”
He continued by highlighting Inter’s achievements:
“We respect financial fair play. We’ve reduced losses from €246 million to €46 million while winning the Scudetto, the Supercoppa, and earning our second star. Let me remind him: Inter is the only team in Milan with two stars.”
On Transfers and Squad Depth
“I don’t think we’ll make moves in January for two reasons: we have a competitive squad that meets our objectives, and the winter transfer market often doesn’t provide real opportunities. Our team is already at a high level and offers guarantees for the future.”
On Simone Inzaghi
“His results speak for themselves. He has integrated well into the club, maintaining excellent relationships with both management and staff. I’m convinced our partnership can last for a long time.”
