Marcus Thuram’s Fitness Concerns Linger Ahead of Juventus Clash

Start

Inter Milan’s preparations for the highly anticipated rematch of the Derby d’Italia against Juventus have been overshadowed by ongoing fitness concerns surrounding Marcus Thuram. The French striker, who was forced off in the 28th minute of Monday’s match against Fiorentina due to an ankle knock, continues to experience discomfort and has been relegated to individual training sessions for the second consecutive day.

Calciomercato report that while medical examinations have ruled out any ligament damage, offering hope for a timely recovery before Sunday’s 20:45 kickoff, there are no concrete guarantees regarding Thuram’s availability. The player’s quick decision to leave the field upon feeling discomfort may have prevented a more severe injury, particularly considering the looming title clash against Napoli on March 2nd.

However, manager Simone Inzaghi now faces the prospect of fielding a player who may be far from peak condition. Thuram’s recent form had already shown signs of physical strain, with the striker failing to score in his last four league appearances despite being Inter’s top scorer with 14 goals this season.

The demanding schedule, which has seen Thuram make 32 appearances for Inter across all competitions, plus five for the French national team, appears to have taken its toll. Since August, he has missed only three matches for Inter, with his absence most notably felt during the Supercoppa Italiana final against AC Milan on January 6th.

Inter’s technical staff are hopeful for a gradual recovery, with tomorrow’s training session expected to provide crucial insights into Thuram’s physical state. Another day of separate training, with the best-case scenario being his return for Saturday’s final practice, would leave Inzaghi with a player in less than ideal condition for such a crucial fixture.

The situation is further complicated by limited alternatives in Inter’s attacking lineup. Marko Arnautovic is also not at full fitness, Joaquin Correa has been absent since early December, and new arrival Mehdi Taremi has yet to make a significant impact. As the countdown to the Juventus clash continues, all eyes will be on Thuram’s recovery progress, with Inter hoping their star striker can regain fitness in time for this pivotal match in the Serie A title race.
