Il Messaggero newspaper report that former Roma full-back Marcos Cafu has filed a lawsuit against the Giallorossi and Qatar Airways. The Rome based daily report that the summons for a final attempt at conciliation is set for 17 November, otherwise, the former footballer will take both the club and the airline to court for a multi-million dollar compensation regarding the violation of his image rights.
The newspaper writes that facts date back to 2019, when Cafu gave his OK to become the club’s ‘testimonial’ – in the legend category – as part of the new sponsorship that the club, led at the time by James Pallotta, signed with Qatar Airways. The player flew to Warsaw and recorded a safety video that began to be broadcast and was waiting for updates from Roma.
He reportedly sked Vincenzo Aliotta, his trusted man in the capital, to come to an agreement with the Giallorossi, which, however, kept being postponed. In August 2020 there was a change of ownership with the advent of the Friedkin family. Cafu waited for several months as he did not want to make a legal move against a club that ‘has remained in his heart.’
Having not receiving an adequate response, he has now decided to take legal action in recent weeks and, considering the long period in which the commercial was broadcast (46 months) and the current remuneration the Brazilian receives for certain sponsorships, is ready to ask for compensation of €11.8 million.
