Milan director Paolo Maldini admits that they’ve been talking about a contract extension with Rafael Leao for months, but will have to wait until after the World Cup. The Rossoneri are at work to extend the deals of both Leao and midfielder Ismael Bennacer, but talks have dragged on for some time. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia (via Milannews.com), Maldini elaborated on the situation and what he expected to happen next:
We’ve been talking about this [contract extensions] for months, if not years. We’ll meet at the right moment and make a decision. The idea was to close [the deal] before the World Cup, especially with players involved in the competition, Leao in this case.
It was not possible. We have a chance to talk to Bennacer and his agents these days.
My role? I am not strictly a sporting director, although some duties are partially the same. There isn’t a role like mine in any other club. I am responsible for the technical area. I am very happy to be here in this new chapter of my life.”
