Paolo Maldini wanted to bring Andrea Pirlo to Milan while arguments with Stefano Pioli contributed to his dismal. The Rossoneri legend was dismissed from his role as club director on Monday, with a number of stories doing the rounds on the reasoning behind the dismissal.
Il Giornale report that Milan were ready to form a new group with CEO Giorgio Furliani leading the way, Pioli in charge of the team and Geoffrey Moncada taking on a more executive role. This new management structure may have been proposed months earlier, prompting Milan owner Gerry Cardinale to fire Maldini just days after the season ended.
The report also outlines how Maldini wanted to bring in ex-teammate Pirlo to take over the coaching role, news which eventually filtered to Pioli, leading to a breakdown in relations between the two.
Another detail in the breakdown was that Maldini sent to Cardinale’s attention a draft of a three-year investment plan to be implemented at Milan, following the sustainable football model. That email was never answered.
Meanwhile, the Curva Sud, never overly close with Maldini since the time of his farewell to football, intervened in the debate on the case of the day, without taking sides regarding the resounding divorce (“we do not enter into these choices”) but repeating the call for “a quality leap in the market”.
Il Giornale report how the summer transfer market plans outlined by Maldini and Massara are now expected to be changed, meaning links to played like Marko Arnautovic and Domenico Berardi may or may not be pursued.
