Lukaku: ‘I put everything into that finish’

Start

Romelu Lukaku says he ‘put everything’ into finishing his goal during Inter’s 1-0 victory over Porto in the Champions League. The Belgian striker scored the only goal of the night, late in the game, and speaking with Amazon Prime Italia after the match, he made a point of thanking teammate Nicolo Barella for the assist after reports they fell out during a training session last week:

“I put everything into that finish. We wanted to win, we could’ve scored a second goal and were unable to do it. The important thing was to secure the victory.

“Did I feel liberated scoring the goal? The important thing is to win, I am not individualistic, so I focus only on trying to do what is best for Inter. I am happy for the victory, let us carry on like this.

“I am also happy that it was Barella who gave me the assist, because I always said he is the first player I would pick to go into war with if I had to.”

Lukaku also appeared to poke fun at the comments of Inter CEO Beppe Marotta, who suggested the 29-year-old striker was overweight. Speaking ahead of the game, Marotta commented:

“I have to say he has 103kg to carry around, so he needs to be in perfect physical shape to deliver and he is not there yet. He’s getting there and the coach is the best person to evaluate how he is doing and how he should be used. Games tend to last almost 100 minutes nowadays, so the players who come off the bench can be just as important as what I like to call their co-starters.”

Speaking with Sky Sport after the game, Lukaku commented:  “Fu**, look at me up top… I’m in great shape, mamma mia!”
