Luis Suárez, the legendary striker for Inter Miami, has announced his retirement from the Uruguayan national team, marking the end of an illustrious international career. In an emotional press conference, Suárez expressed his decision to step away from “La Celeste” after the upcoming Copa América, stating, “I talked to my wife, and one day I woke up and thought it was something I wanted to close. I have earned the right to decide and end it as I wish.”
Reflecting on his career and legacy, Suárez shared his concerns: “This will be my last match with the national team. I’ve thought about it, analyzed it, and decided that it is the right time to say goodbye because I have my reasons. No one made this decision for me. It’s difficult, but it’s the right moment for me to play my last game with the national team. And I will play it with the same enthusiasm as my first game in 2007.”
Suárez also addressed his infamous incident during the 2014 World Cup, where he bit Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini, saying, “My biggest fear is that my children and everyone will remember the image from 2014. It was my biggest mistake. I have forgotten that episode, and I would like people to forget it like I did, to not overshadow everything. I want them to remember all the beautiful things I have done.”
Suárez’s international career spans 142 matches, in which he scored 69 goals, making him Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer. He debuted for the national team in 2007 and played in numerous major tournaments, including four World Cups and the 2011 Copa América, where Uruguay emerged victorious.
