Lazio president Claudio Lotito has unveiled a new approach to the transfer market, committing approximately 60 million euros in a series of innovative deals. This strategy aims to strengthen the squad while navigating financial regulations and preparing for potential Champions League qualification.
Corriere dello Sport report that the recent acquisitions of Reda Belahyane and Oliver Provstgaard follow a pattern established with earlier signings like Nuno Tavares and Dia. Lotito’s formula involves securing players on a “buy now, pay later” basis, with definitive purchases structured to defer payments. This approach builds on the success of deals like those for Rovella and Pellegrini, who joined on two-year free loans with mandatory purchase options totaling 21 million euros, effective from 2025.
Lotito’s ingenuity in transfer dealings has allowed Lazio to circumvent liquidity index constraints more easily. The club’s sporting director, Angelo Fabiani, emphasized that this strategy demonstrates how football can be managed effectively through ideas rather than reckless spending. He noted that these formulas enable the club to operate without incurring sanctions while still securing talented players.
The total commitment for recent transfers, including Rovella, Pellegrini, Dia, Nuno Tavares, Belahyane, and Provstgaard, amounts to 58.8 million euros. This figure could rise to 66.8 million if Lazio decides to exercise their option on Ibrahimovic. Interestingly, Bayern Munich retains a buy-back clause for Ibrahimovic at 25 million euros, potentially offering Lazio a significant future profit.
This shift in transfer policy indicates a move towards a player trading model, with Champions League qualification seen as crucial for accelerating Lazio’s three-year project. Fabiani remained cautious about making predictions, possibly alluding to perceived refereeing injustices the team has faced.
The club has also shown resolve in retaining key players, reportedly rejecting offers totaling 100 million euros for stars like Romagnoli, Tavares, Rovella, and Castellanos. This stance aligns with their ambition to compete on multiple fronts without weakening the squad.
Looking ahead, Lazio plan to address contract renewals, with intentions to retain veteran Pedro and adjust young goalkeeper Mandas’s terms. The situation with Marusic remains open, with his contract automatically extending to 2026.
