Former Inter Milan defender Marco Materazzi has offered some candid advice to Davide Frattesi amidst swirling transfer rumours. Drawing parallels to his own experience in 2006, Materazzi urges Frattesi to think carefully before making any hasty decisions about leaving Inter.
“If I were Frattesi, I wouldn’t act on impulse,” Materazzi stated. “I could have done so in 2006, but I didn’t, and it was the best decision I made in my ten years at Inter.”
Materazzi revealed that he too had faced a similar dilemma early in 2006, when limited playing time under Roberto Mancini led him to consider a move to AC Milan. However, two crucial conversations changed his mind.
“One was with Lippi, who reassured me: ‘I don’t care if you’re a starter at Inter or not. There’s a place for you in the National team.’ The other was with Facchetti: ‘Marco, we need you here at Inter,'” Materazzi recalled.
The World Cup winner emphasized the importance of the support Frattesi has received from Inter’s management and coach Simone Inzaghi. “It’s an important signal that Frattesi can’t ignore, even if he wants to play more,” Materazzi said.
Addressing rumors of Frattesi’s potential move to Roma, Materazzi cautioned against it. “He’d find a difficult environment there. Look at Pellegrini… Until his goal in the derby, he went through tough times,” he warned.
Materazzi dismissed concerns about Frattesi’s recent performances, stating, “Those who criticize him are wrong. In Riyadh, he came on at too delicate a moment to make ‘a Frattesi impact’. In Venice, he lost a ball, and Busio hit the post on the counter-attack. It happens. Everyone makes mistakes.”
In conclusion, Materazzi advised Frattesi to consider his long-term prospects at Inter. “Frattesi must think about how he experiences Inter, the locker room, the city. In the Nerazzurri, he has the future ahead of him: he can become a pillar of the midfield for the next 10 years,” he said.
