Lega Serie A: ‘Shocked and concerned about scrapping of Growth Decree’

Start

Lega Serie A noted their ‘shock and concern’ about the decision to scrap the extension of the Italian Growth Decree. The tax break was expected to be extended until late February 2024, but news has now filtered through that the Italian government will go ahead and put a stop to it as of January 1 2024.

The Italian football league have released a statement, reiterating their concerns over the decision:

“Lega Serie A notes with astonishment and concern the press rumours circulated in the evening regarding the decision that the Council of Ministers would have taken not to approve any extension of the special tax regime for impatriate sports workers. Such a decision, if confirmed, will have as its only result an outcome diametrically opposed to the one pursued,.”

“The non-extension, as also illustrated in detail in a note sent to the government in recent days, will in fact result in lower competitiveness of the teams, with a consequent reduction in revenues, fewer resources to be destined for the youth academies, less induced income and therefore also less revenue for the treasury.”

“Since the extension proposal had obtained the technical go-ahead to be presented to the Council of Ministers, the fact that it would eventually be excluded suggests that for the umpteenth time a distorted vision of professional football has prevailed, vitiated by fallacious commonplaces: a vision that unfortunately does not take into account the extraordinary economic, as well as social and cultural, role that this industry sector plays in Italy.”

“Should the outcome of the Consoglio dei Ministri be confirmed, Serie A hopes that Parliament will be able to correct this error, which damages not only Italian football, but the entire sport and its considerable induced activities.”
