A report from La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests that Rafael Leao’s renewal with Milan is ‘frosty’ at the moment and there are ‘obstacles’ in potential talks. Recent reports had suggested that things between the two parties were progressing and a breakthrough on a new deal was expected at the start of the month.
Gazzetta now report that Milan were aiming to complete Leao’s contract renewal this month but the last few days have not bought positive news. Today was expected to be important as the two parties were going to meet for more talks but the report claims this meeting has been cancelled.
The negotiations between Leao and the club remain complex: In December the Portuguese international took a step forward in the talks as he was convinced of Milans offer of €6-7 a season which would help the player deal with the €19.5m he still owes former club Sporting Lisbon.
The ongoing issue now reportedly related to commissions and which party will pay them and helps to explain why they are no closer to reaching an agreement. Milan are also keen on removing the €150m release clause while Leao’s agents would like to lower it to help facilitate a potential future transfer.
