Lazio extended their impressive run of form with a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Cagliari on Monday night, moving to within three points of league leaders Napoli. Manager Marco Baroni, who was named Serie A Coach of the Month for October before the match, emphasized the importance of focusing on improvement rather than the league table.
“Our primary ambition is to work and improve,” Baroni stated in his post-match interview. “The league standings are pleasing, but it would be a mistake to focus on them. We were built to have an important season. We’re happy with these points, but we’re not looking at the table.”
Despite his cautious approach, Baroni hinted at the team’s lofty aspirations: “We want to be protagonists until the end in all competitions. We care about this, and we have players who are up to the task.”
The manager praised his team’s resilience and fighting spirit, particularly given the challenging schedule ahead. “I must compliment the squad. Even though we weren’t as clean as in other matches, our spirit, dedication, desire, and ability to suffer came through. These are crucial aspects when playing high-level matches in quick succession.”
Lazio now turns their attention to their upcoming Europa League clash against Porto. Baroni stressed the importance of recovery and preparation: “We have two days to recover before facing a great team like Porto. Our energy must be channeled there.”
Looking ahead, Baroni identified areas for improvement within the squad: “We need to develop some players. Each has their own path, and some are playing different roles. But the important thing is that the team always gives everything.”
