Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae has apologised for his comments following South Korea’s 2-1 loss to Uruguay in a friendly match. The 26-year-old appeared tired and frustrated when speaking in the post-match conference, telling the gathered press:
“I am mentally tired and I only want to focus on my club at the moment, not on the national team, I have nothing more to say now.”
The comments caused some anger in his native country, prompting the centre-back to take to social media and apologise for his comments. An Instagram post from the player read:
“I’m sorry, my words were misrepresented. I’m sorry if my words hurt anyone. I am a representative player of this national team and I have never taken it for granted, even when I was not at my best physically or when I had to travel across the world to answer a call-up.
I collapsed mentally and had an outburst. I apologize again and ask the fans to always support us.”
The South-Korean international has been an integral part of Napoli’s title charge this season, forming a strong defensive partnership with teammate Amir Rrahmani in the back line. The Partenopei are 19 points clear in Serie A and are counting down to the title celebrations in Naples, while also preparing for a two-legged Champions League tie against Milan.
