Juventus have emerged as a serious contender in the pursuit of Chelsea defender Renato Veiga, signalling the start of a potentially significant transfer saga for the 21-year-old Portuguese talent.
Veiga, who joined Chelsea from Basel last summer for £12 million, is actively seeking an exit from Stamford Bridge due to limited playing opportunities. The versatile defender has primarily been used as a left-back, despite his preference to play as a central defender.
The young Portuguese international has struggled to establish himself in Chelsea’s first team, starting just one Premier League game this season. His frustration stems from being unable to play in his preferred centre-back position, with the club having several established defenders ahead of him in the pecking order.
While Borussia Dortmund have been the most prominently linked club, Matteo Moretto reports that Juventus has now entered the transfer race. Preliminary exploratory talks have already begun between Chelsea and the Italian giants, indicating serious interest in securing Veiga’s services.
Chelsea are expected to demand around €30 million for the player, who has already impressed at the international level by earning his first three senior caps for Portugal since joining the Blues.
Manager Enzo Maresca has previously emphasized the importance of versatility, suggesting Veiga’s limited game time is part of a broader development strategy. However, the player’s desire for more consistent playing time in his preferred position appears to be driving his potential departure.
