Juventus and Wojciech Szczesny are close to reaching a mutual agreement to terminate the goalkeeper’s contract, which currently runs until June 30, 2025. The club has decided to focus on Michele Di Gregorio and Mattia Perin, opening the transfer market for the 1990-born player, who has yet to find a suitable offer. Discussions have intensified recently, bringing them close to a resolution.
Calciomercato report how Szczesny, who joined Juventus seven years ago, appears to be nearing the end of his journey with the club, making a departure seem inevitable. This move, anticipated for months, might even lead to Szczesny considering retirement from football.
Lack of Space
For some time, it has been clear that there is no longer room for the Polish goalkeeper at Continassa. Several factors contribute to this, primarily his €6.5 million net salary, which makes him the second-highest-paid player after Dusan Vlahovic. Juventus’ sporting director, Cristiano Giuntoli, is focused on rejuvenating the squad, further distancing Szczesny from the club, especially with Di Gregorio set to take the starting position.
Separation
The separation seems to be the most viable option, with both Juventus and Szczesny exploring solutions that satisfy all parties. There was interest from Monza, with Adriano Galliani expressing a desire to bring Szczesny in as a replacement for Di Gregorio, who moved to Juventus. However, Monza has opted for young goalkeeper Semuel Pizzignacco, partially closing the door on Szczesny, who is now considering other options, including a move abroad or to Napoli. Yet, the most likely scenario is a contract termination.
Possible Retirement
As reported by Tuttosport, Juventus is exploring ways to end Szczesny’s contract, which has another year remaining, with a potential severance package. This agreement would acknowledge Szczesny’s contributions over the years while relieving Juventus of his substantial salary. Without satisfactory options for continuing his career, Szczesny is also contemplating retirement. He has previously indicated a lack of interest in playing until his 40s, unlike Gianluigi Buffon.
