Juventus director Francesco Calvo called Angel Di Maria ‘a very important player’ and is ‘confident’ about reaching an agreement on a contract extension. The Bianconeri boss was speaking to DAZN (as quoted by TuttoJuve) ahead of their 1-0 loss to Roma at the Olimpico last night and touched on the topic of the Argentine’s contract and the ongoing dispute with former player Paulo Dybala regarding the wages the club still owe him:
Is the renewal of Di Maria not really a priority now or is it being worked on?
“I think Di Maria is definitely a technical leader and a locker room leader, so he is a very important player. We always want to keep important players with us and the proof is the renewal we announced this week of Danilo, so with Di Maria we are talking, we’ll give it time, we do negotiations behind the scenes, lights out, then when we have something to announce we will announce it, but we are confident.”
Is there any regret regarding Dybala?
“Dybala has been an important player at Juventus for seven seasons, he is certainly a champion. Today he is a Roma player, so we look at Juve players, we look at the present and the future of Juventus and we don’t look back.”
There is also the issue of outstanding wages raised by him. How can a solution be reached?
“As an Italian who has lived many years abroad I am always surprised when we read in the newspapers about things that shouldn’t be made public. These deeds, all these reports that have come out in the newspapers, are clearly in the hands of our lawyers who are dealing with them, but I would like to point out that none of these deeds have yet been examined by a judge, so trials and judgments are made in the courts and at the moment we cannot add anything more.”
