Italiano remains optimistic despite Bologna’s slow start

Start

Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano maintained a positive outlook following his team’s second consecutive home draw, which left them with just two points from their first three matches of the season. Despite the slow start, Italiano focused on the team’s energy and possession-based play, while acknowledging areas that need improvement.

“Once again, the team expressed itself with important spirit and energy. We always had control of the game and conceded little,” Italiano stated in his post-match analysis. However, he pointed out a recurring issue: “At the moment, we can’t seem to keep a clean sheet. We only allowed Empoli 2-3 shots, but we need to be more attentive.”

The coach also highlighted the team’s lack of efficiency in front of goal: “On our part, we were once again not concrete enough despite clear chances in the penalty area. The performance was there, but we need to continue growing in many aspects.”

Bologna’s goals have come primarily from set-pieces so far this season, with Orsolini scoring a penalty against Udinese and Fabbian netting from a corner against Empoli. This reliance on set-pieces, coupled with defensive vulnerabilities, has left Italiano with much to work on.

When asked if the start at Bologna had been tougher than anticipated, Italiano responded: “It’s tough for everyone. We’re starting from scratch, knowing that we don’t have Zirkzee, Calafiori, Saelemaekers, and Ferguson, and the coach has changed. We’re all starting from zero, but I remain confident.”
