Inzaghi: ‘We were in control of the pitch after 2-0’

Start

Inter coach Simone Inzaghi believes his team were in control of the pitch after going 2-0 up against Napoli. Goals from Hakan Calhanoglu, Nicolo Barella and Marcus Thuram helped secure an important three points to take them back to the top of the Serie A standings. Speaking with DAZN after the game, offered his analysis of the game and an update on the status of his squad:

“In the first half we had started well, we scored that goal with Thuram that was then cancelled. For sure we were up against a very good team, the Italian champions, but the team did very well. We took a risk on Politano’s shot that hit the crossbar and Sommer’s save, but we did well. I hugged the boys one by one because they deserve it and because it was the fifth away match in the last six, and we needed a performance like that”.

“In the second half after 2-0 we became masters of the pitch. Winning in Naples in this way makes us happy but we know that we’re on matchday 14 and there’s a lot of work to do. We lost de Vrij after eighteen minutes, we had Bastoni and Pavard at home. I had Bisseck, I had Carlos who hadn’t played centre-back for a year and a half, since he played for Monza with Stroppa. I didn’t want to move Darmian because Kvara was a tough nut to crack.”

“Thuram? This year he arrived with great hunger, as everyone should have.

“Tactics? We started off better…..the more you keep Napoli away from the area the better. In that quarter of an hour when we lowered ourselves we had more difficulty. Margin of growth? We’ve had a good and unexpected three and a half months, given that we changed 12-13 players”

“Injuries? We were more pessimistic about de Vrij than Dumfries. In ten-fifteen days Pavard will also be back”

“Scudetto? Tomorrow they will write that we have no rivals, while at 3-0 on Wednesday at the end of the first half they were preparing other articles. But we’re used to it. I want to thank those who were here and those who were prevented from travelling”.
