Inter eyeing swap deal for Genoa’s Josep Martinez

Start

In their quest to secure a long-term successor for veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer, Serie A champions Inter have opened preliminary talks to acquire the services of Genoa’s Spanish shot-stopper Josep Martinez.

According to reports from Italian transfer expert Matteo Moretto, the Nerazzurri are exploring the possibility of a player-plus-cash swap deal, with Argentine striker Martín Satriano potentially being included as part of the transaction.

While Genoa’s initial asking price for Martinez stands at a substantial €20 million, Inter Milan are expected to negotiate in an attempt to lower the demands of the Grifone. Moretto suggests that Satriano may not be the only player offered by the Nerazzurri, leaving room for additional players to be included in the proposed swap deal.

Martinez, a 26-year-old former Barcelona academy product, joined Genoa on a permanent transfer from RB Leipzig in 2023, following a successful one-year loan spell at Marassi. During the 2023-24 Serie A campaign, the Spaniard showcased his prowess by keeping eight clean sheets across 36 appearances.

Inter Milan’s pursuit of Martinez aligns with their long-term strategy of grooming a young goalkeeper to eventually take over the mantle from the experienced Yann Sommer, whose contract expires in 2025-26. While Brazilian prospect Bento remains on the Nerazzurri’s radar, negotiations with Athletico Paranaense have stalled, prompting the Italian giants to explore alternative targets.
