Ibrahimovic Blasts Referees: “Walker and Tomori Cases Unacceptable. I Demand Respect for Milan”

Start

AC Milan presented their fifth and final winter transfer window signing, João Félix, at a press conference at Casa Milan. The Portuguese attacker, on loan from Chelsea, has already made a positive impact with a debut goal against Roma in the Coppa Italia and a strong performance in his first Serie A start against Empoli.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, now in a management role at Milan, introduced the new signing but also used the opportunity to voice his frustration over recent refereeing decisions in the Empoli-Milan match. Here are the key points from Ibrahimovic’s statements:

On João Félix’s Arrival

Ibrahimovic welcomed Félix, praising his talent and experience: “João Félix is a great talent with experience in Spain, England, and the national team. He’s still young and can grow. We sought a player who could operate between midfield and attack, capable of unlocking tight games and making a difference.”

On Tactical Flexibility

When asked about the possibility of playing all four attackers together, Ibrahimovic emphasized the importance of balance: “As long as they defend, they can all play together. Balance is crucial, both in defense and attack. No one has a guaranteed place in Milan’s lineup. Players became legends here because they knew their spot wasn’t guaranteed and gave their all.”

Refereeing Controversies

Ibrahimovic expressed strong disapproval of recent refereeing decisions: “I always ask our players to be respectful towards referees. At half-time, I asked the referee to respect Milan players. I’m surprised our players didn’t react more strongly to the Walker situation, which was out of control. If it goes wrong, this player risks not playing for a year.”

He continued, “The Tomori situation is a consequence of VAR, letting play continue because you don’t stop the game. Tomori gets a second yellow and is sent off, but there was an offside before. This is unacceptable for us, and we will send a letter to the AIA (Italian Referees Association).”

Ibrahimovic demanded more respect for Milan: “We need respect for Milan. I don’t want to criticize the referee, but it’s not the first time this has happened, and I’m only asking for this. Respect for Milan and for the players.”

On Milan’s Inconsistency

Addressing Milan’s up-and-down form, Ibrahimovic said: “It depends on how you approach the matches, how you prepare for them. You need to have the same approach against smaller teams as you do against bigger ones. The important thing is to have the low moments as high as possible. We’re seeking to improve further.”

On João Félix’s Potential

When asked who João Félix reminds him of, Ibrahimovic was cautious with comparisons: “It’s difficult and not fair to compare him to other players. If I have to choose one, I’d say Kaká, very fluid and dynamic. Maybe he likes to do more tricks than Kaká, who was more direct, but he’s still young. It’s true he’s on loan, but if he does well, anything is possible.”
