Gnonto: ‘I will always be grateful to Inter but I don’t see it as a missed opportunity’

Leeds United winger Willy Gnonto has been in good form in the Premier League so far this season and that has led to Azzurri boss Roberto Mancini selecting him for the upcoming matches with the national team. The 19-year-old has already featured eight times for Italy, having made his debut in the Nations League against Germany last summer. Speaking with Corriere della Sera, via Calciomercato, Gnonto talked about his time at Inter, his past experiences with Mancini and the Premier League.

On Mancini:

“The truth? I feel the same. I remember when I was little at Inter and he coached the first team: he was an idol and I never expected to be in the national team with him.”

His Azzurri dream:

“It seems like a dream to me: I come from Baveno and I never expected one day to get to the Premier League or to receive compliments from players like that. I live everything with great pride and I always try to work hard to improve”.

On Inter:

“I will always be grateful to Inter, but I don’t see it as a missed opportunity. I had to make a choice, I went to Switzerland to play and I think I made the right one for me and my family.”

On the Premier League:

“The structures there are at the top. And in Italy there’s more pressure, I think. At Leeds, the players are left alone.”
