Alberto Gilardino was ‘bitter’ about Genoa’s 2-1 loss to Cagliari, saying his team need to work on the details if they are to remain in Serie A for another season. The Grifone had their chances to equalise but failed to capitalise in the final third, something Gilardino spoke about in the post-match:
“There is bitterness, regret for the epilogue and the result. After a balanced first half, the second half opened up. We made too many mistakes on the two goals. When we had taken over the game, we should have kept our attention high. This was not the case, but then in the final moments there were two-three very important situations on which we could have scored”.
“Verona next? For us they are all direct matches, every match implies sacrifice, determination, will to bring home the result and from this point of view I can’t reproach the boys for anything. In order to stay in A, we need to iron out some details, remain lucid and conscious throughout the match. We then had a reaction, from this point of view the boys are always there. In five days we play an important match in front of our fans.”
“Injuries? I don’t look for alibis, it’s not in my mentality. I work and keep everyone in the group, I try to make them all feel important. Certainly the absences are important, now we have to turn the page quickly by correcting the situations.
“Gudmundsson? He scored an incredible goal, then he lost the ball on Cagliari’s goal. We hold on to him, his performance level is high also thanks to the work of his teammates. Today the choices were forced, Puscas had cramps after the cup, Ekuban isn’t well. Malinovskyi was adapted for this, he worked well. When he is at the top he can give a lot.”
“For Retegui’s return, we’re looking at beyond Verona, also for Messias.”
