Alberto Gilardino addressed the media in a post-match conference following Genoa’s 5-1 loss to Atalanta, expressing his disappointment and concern over the team’s performance.
Gilardino began by acknowledging the difficulty of the match: “It’s hard to comment on a game like this. Until the 1-0, I believe we held our ground well, but from 2-0 onwards, Atalanta overwhelmed us in every aspect.”
The manager was particularly critical of his team’s mentality: “What’s inconceivable is the surrender, even against a strong team. We gave the impression of being a fragile team. There are certainly limitations, and there’s great bitterness and regret.”
When asked about the turning point in the match, Gilardino pointed to the second goal: “From 2-0, there were many lapses in concentration. We gave the impression of having abandoned the game. Now we need to work and try to move forward; we must follow this path.”
Addressing concerns about team morale and his position, Gilardino stated: “The team is giving what it can, which I know is very little, but it’s the maximum we can give. However, there are attitudes we must avoid. Support? You should ask the club about that. I’m angry, but at the same time, I’m charged up and eager to get out of this situation.”
Looking ahead to the upcoming match against Bologna, Gilardino emphasized its importance: “It’s a crucial game. All matches are decisive and fundamental. We must maintain great clarity; the championship is very long. There’s an obligation to improve; we must want it.”
Finally, when asked about former Genoa player Mateo Retegui, who scored a hat-trick for Atalanta, Gilardino was complimentary: “I know him as a player; he’s a goalscorer. Then, with a master like Gasperini, he’s doing exceptional things.”
