Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino hopes to continue his teams progress and admits they need to be active in the summer transfer window. Il Grifone signed off the 2023-24 campaign with a 2-0 victory over high-flying Bologna, and speaking after the match, Gilardino highlighted the progress his side have made this season in an interview with Sky Sport Italia:
“I am happy and enthusiastic about how we have grown week after week. We have always given our all. Kudos to the boys and the team. Even tonight, we wanted to finish in the best possible way, we deserved an evening like this with our fans.”
Gilardino continued by discussing the future: “This year we were a surprise, next year we will be a reality. It will be a different and complicated season, but we have an excellent base team. We know that the club will have to make decisions on some sales, but I hope new players will arrive who have equal value to those who will leave. We work with everyone in the best possible way. We will roll up our sleeves and start again with great ambition.”
Further elaborating on the future, Gilardino added: “A lot will depend on the sales, then we will have to intervene. We need to be ready, the club knows this. We need to develop young players, and this will take time even though there isn’t much in football. It is likely that young players from other leagues will arrive, and it will take time to work with them. Everyone needs to know this, we must be realistic. This year has been extraordinary for our reality, we have done something unique. Now I expect to find a solid team base with quality additions.”
