Giaccherini: ‘Conte is the only coach capable of narrowing the gap with Inter’

Former Italian footballer Emanuele Giaccherini has shared his thoughts on Napoli’s prospects following the appointment of Antonio Conte as their new manager. Speaking in an interview on page 22 of the printed edition of Corriere dello Sport (as quoted by TMW), Giaccherini expressed optimism about Napoli’s chances of challenging for the Serie A title, while also highlighting areas that still need improvement.

“Napoli have safeguarded itself by hiring Conte, the only coach capable of narrowing the gap with Inter at this moment,” Giaccherini stated. He emphasized that Inter remains the team to beat in his opinion, but Conte’s arrival could significantly boost Napoli’s competitiveness.

However, Giaccherini cautioned that Conte’s influence alone might not be sufficient. “Conte can do a lot for the team, but players are also needed,” he explained. “Napoli is competitive in its starting eleven, but still needs some reinforcements to become more complete. The coach’s work is fine, but you need the same quality and depth of squads like Inter’s.”

Discussing potential scenarios for the upcoming season, Giaccherini analyzed the variables that could impact Napoli’s performance. “Let’s put it this way: Napoli is a potential challenger if they complete the squad a bit more,” he said. “The absence of European cups helps with weekly management, but the level of the transfer market must remain high. To win, steps forward must be taken.”

Giaccherini also touched on the uncertainty surrounding star striker Victor Osimhen’s future at the club. “You don’t even know if you can count on Osimhen. He’s one who shifts the balance,” he noted.

The former Italy international pointed out areas where Napoli still needs reinforcement. “Something is also missing in midfield and defense, but Buongiorno is a great signing. Future pillar of the national team. With Conte, he can grow exponentially,” Giaccherini concluded, highlighting the potential for player development under the new manager.
