George Weah: “Milan made me feel at home from day one”

Start

Former football star and current President of Liberia, George Weah, recently shared his insights on politics, football, and family at the Festival dello Sport in Trento in Italy. The 58-year-old Ballon d’Or winner and AC Milan legend spoke candidly about his transition from sports to politics and his son’s budding football career.

Weah’s venture into politics stems from a noble cause. “The reason I entered politics is the pursuit of peace,” he explained. “In Africa, if we want to think about doing things, it’s essential that there is peace between our countries.” As President of Liberia, Weah feels a responsibility to give back to his nation after his successful years in football.

Despite being a Juventus fan in his youth, Weah’s heart belongs to AC Milan. He reminisced about his time with the Rossoneri, saying, “They made me feel at home from day one. Berlusconi, Galliani, my teammates, and then the affection of the people – it’s still an incredible thing today.”

Weah’s fondness for Milan didn’t prevent him from scoring against his childhood favorite team, Juventus. He humorously added, “I always scored against the Bianconeri, even though I once missed a penalty.”

George Weah’s son, Timothy, currently plays for Juventus and has chosen to represent the United States national team. Weah fully supports his son’s decision, stating, “When the time came, he told me that he grew up with his friends in New York and felt like playing for the United States national team. It was an additional opportunity to seize, and there was no reason for me to stand in his way.”

The proud father expressed joy at seeing his son in Juventus colors and believes Timothy has significant room for improvement in his career.

George Weah’s journey from football superstar to political leader showcases his commitment to both sport and social progress. His experiences on the pitch and in the political arena have shaped his vision for a peaceful and prosperous Africa, while his support for his son’s career demonstrates his belief in the power of football to bridge generations and cultures.
