Gazzetta: Juventus interested in Mason Greenwood

Start

La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest that Juventus may have interest in Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood this summer. The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Getafe, and is expected to return to his parent club in June, prompting speculation over his future.

Gazzetta report that talks are underway with Federico Chiesa over a contract renewal and negotiations with Felipe Anderson are also progressing for the summer. Alongside, a new prospect has emerged: Mason Greenwood.

The newspaper write that:

“Juventus, in pursuit of technical prowess, dribbling skills, and creativity on the wings for the 2024-25 season, is far from indifferent to the resurgence of the English prodigy, who has bounced back from his loan spell at Getafe after off-field troubles and a prolonged period of inactivity during his Manchester United days.’

According to whispers from Premier League circles, the Bianconeri have been tracking the 22-year-old from Bradford in Spain in recent months and have moved in recent weeks to understand and delve deeper into the situation. March is a time for assessments, not yet for decisive actions. However, Greenwood, as it stands, seems more than just an idea for the decision-makers at Continassa.

Intermingling the interest of Sporting Director Cristiano Giuntoli and his right-hand man Giovanni Manna, who is increasingly active abroad, are primarily three factors: Greenwood’s talent, his age (22 years), and his contractual situation—the agreement with the Red Devils expiring in 2025. Another twist in the tale adds intrigue from Manchester. Hence, barring a change of heart, Greenwood is set to return to Old Trafford by the end of June, albeit not to stay. Another reconstruction looms at United, and the upcoming summer represents the final opportunity to cash in on the player’s departure. Greenwood, in July, certainly won’t come for free, but the 2025 expiration date will inevitably influence the price. These reasons have prompted Juventus to enter the race for the Manchester United prodigy, barely out of his teens. A pure and precocious gem: despite 18 months of inactivity (January 2022-July 2023) and his young age (born in 2001), he has amassed 129 appearances, 35 goals, and 12 assists with the Red Devils.

“Juventus are attracted to the new Greenwood, not his turbulent past as a golden boy. The talent, owned by United, has so far amassed 27 appearances, 8 goals, and 5 assists in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.

“Greenwood can play as a winger/forward on both the right and left flanks and can also be deployed as a second striker, somewhat akin to Federico Chiesa this season. But if Juventus is keeping an eye on the Englishman, it’s because they want to create conditions at Continassa to have an alternative to Massimiliano Allegri’s current 3-5-2 formation. This can only be achieved by adding some attacking wingers for a 4-3-3/3-4-3 setup, adept at one-on-one situations and possessing explosive pace. For Greenwood, Juventus doesn’t stand alone; competition comes from Spain and England, but regardless, the rejuvenated gem at Getafe wouldn’t be seen as an alternative to either Chiesa or Felipe Anderson. Federico’s contract expires in 2025: negotiations continue, and optimism, especially after Juventus’ qualification for the 32-team Club World Cup (June-July 2025), is slightly on the rise. The parties continue to discuss a “bridge extension” for a year (until 2026), a solution that would buy time for everyone. This way, Juventus would avert the risk of losing the Italian international on a free transfer, and Chiesa would have the opportunity to shine at the Club World Cup. Otherwise, without an agreement, a summer split is inevitable. While awaiting developments in Chiesa’s case, Continassa is making progress on Felipe Anderson, who seems set to leave Lazio as a free agent: negotiations regarding financial aspects and the duration of the agreement continue—a crucial piece of the puzzle necessary to finalize things once the Old Lady’s return to the elite European stage is official.”
