Gatti on standby for Italy squad

Start

Juventus defender Federico Gatti has been called up for the Italy squad after Inter centre-back Francesco Acerbi has been forced to withdraw from the squad for EURO 2024 due to an injury.

The squad is scheduled to convene at the Coverciano training ground on Friday to commence preparations for the tournament in Germany. Coach Luciano Spalletti had initially named a 30-man provisional list, which will be trimmed down to 26 players for the final competition.

Acerbi, who was included in the squad following his successful season with Inter, where he won the Scudetto and Supercoppa Italiana, is now sidelined due to groin pain. According to a statement on the FIGC website, Acerbi is expected to undergo surgery on Friday to address the issue ahead of the next season.

In response to Acerbi’s withdrawal, Spalletti has alerted Juventus defender Federico Gatti. It remains uncertain if Gatti will join the squad for the upcoming training sessions. Italy are set to compete against Albania, Spain, and Croatia in the group stage of EURO 2024.
