Gasperini: ‘We played on equal terms, in fact we did something more’

Start

Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini believes his team played the match against Inter on ‘equal terms’ and did something more against the Nerazzurri. The match ended 2-1 in favour of Inter, but La Dea had their share of chances to bring the match level. Speaking with DAZN, Gasperini pointed to his sides performance, saying they should not be too discouraged by the result:

“It was played on equal terms, I think we did something more. We had a bit of difficulty at the beginning of the second half, we must reproach ourselves very little except for some imprecision on some incidents. We must also give credit to Inter, they can punish you as happened on Lautaro’s goal”.

What lessons do you bring home?

“If we leave aside the disappointment of the result we must take very good things from this match, for what little we conceded to a strong team like Inter but for long stretches we always managed to play. It must give us energy, when you lose there is disappointment but on Tuesday we will find more strength”.

The penalty changed Atalanta’s psychological inertia, why the switch to 4 at the back?

“The change was already being planned during the match, if we had found ourselves in the lead. It could have been more risky but after the penalty it changed our game psychologically, we were doing very well. Also their defence started to be not precise, the inertia of the match was strong on our side and that’s the regret. After this kind of performance against a strong team you should not come out regretting”.

Why were you angry about the penalty?

“We were a bit chicken, I was angry about fouls that had been whistled earlier. It was a continuous series of penalties and I didn’t like it. The match was fair and hard-fought.

Muriel came in very well, but not De Kelelaere.

“De Ketelaere, the closer he is to the goal the more he can make decisive plays, he put in some good balls and was also a reference. Muriel is more explosive, he put in a couple of crosses where Hateboer was surprised. Muriel’s impact has always been explosive.

Then the confirmation of Scamacca.

“Certainly like Lookman, he was difficult to mark and still has room for improvement. Scamacca for continuity has done well, we are satisfied with that and we must have confidence for the future’.
