Gasperini: ‘We missed a good opportunity’

Start

The UEFA Super Cup final between Real Madrid and Atalanta ended with a 2-0 victory for the Spanish giants. Los Blancos secured their first trophy of the season thanks to goals from Federico Valverde and Kylian Mbappe’s debut strike for Madrid. Following the match, Atalanta’s coach Gian Piero Gasperini shared his thoughts with Sky Sport.

Gasperini began by acknowledging Real Madrid’s deserved win: “I was quite confident that we could play a good game and challenge Real. The match changed after the second goal: they deserved the victory. In this type of game, it’s difficult to come back when you fall behind.”

The Italian coach then expressed a mix of disappointment and pride: “We lost a good opportunity given how the match unfolded. There was a chance to take the lead: we need to be more clinical. I’m very proud, but we’re always missing that final touch; I’m sorry for the boys because they gave everything.”

Reflecting on the missed opportunities and the team’s performance, Gasperini added: “There was an opportunity to take the lead: we need to be more clinical. I’m very proud but we’re always missing that little bit; I’m disappointed for the lads because they gave everything.”

Looking ahead, Gasperini concluded on a forward-thinking note: “Now we think about drawing something positive from tonight’s game. The league starts on Monday, and it will be a whole different story.”
