Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini shared his thoughts following his team’s commanding 5-1 victory over Genoa in Serie A. The win comes on the heels of their successful Champions League outing against Shakhtar Donetsk, signaling a strong run of form for the Bergamo side.
Gasperini began by praising his team’s performance: “We played a great game; we’re in a good moment. The victory against Shakhtar launched us, and the team is growing. When we’re on form like this evening or Wednesday, we can do great things. The result is always what leads to judgments, and for us, it was important to return to winning in the league.”
The coach highlighted the impact of new signings, noting the challenges and progress in integrating them into the squad: “There are 10 new players, and it was crucial that they started to make an impact. The more we play, the easier it becomes for them to fit in. Playing many games sometimes offers positive aspects as well. Retegui is the most striking aspect, but other players have also done well recently, and we’re gradually integrating them all. By playing more matches, I hope to have more and more players available.”
When asked about reaching 900 points in Serie A, joining the ranks of esteemed managers like Allegri, Spalletti, Capello, and Ancelotti, Gasperini remained humble: “Compared to them, I’m missing a few more Scudetti, although we shouldn’t think about that now. On one hand, I’m very pleased because I achieved this with Genoa and Atalanta, it seems like a lot; on the other hand, I’m a bit sad because it means many seasons have passed, so I’d gladly go back in time.”
Interestingly, Gasperini expressed some disappointment with the summer transfer window: “I expected less after the revolution of the summer market. Like every year, we come out of the market two steps back instead of two steps forward.”
