Gasperini: ‘I can’t say if the Atalanta we see in Week 4 will be better than last year’s team’

Atalanta suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Inter Milan at San Siro, marking their second consecutive loss after falling to Torino. Manager Gian Piero Gasperini spoke to DAZN about the match and the team’s current situation.

Reflecting on the game, Gasperini acknowledged the team’s difficulties, especially in defense where they were short-handed. He noted that the first ten minutes set a negative tone for the squad. However, he expressed optimism about the upcoming international break, stating, “After the break, we’ll finally have all our players available. I’m convinced our real season will begin after the pause.”

Despite the lopsided scoreline, Gasperini found some positives, particularly in the performances of new arrivals who tried to maintain their presence on the field until the end. He mentioned that the team attempted to create opportunities, especially in the first half, but it wasn’t enough. “Now we need to build on these small positive aspects and construct a more complete team,” he added.

Regarding the summer transfer window, Gasperini described it as unusual, marked by numerous changes. He praised the club for making excellent moves, particularly in player sales, which allowed for significant reinvestment. However, he pointed out that most new players arrived only in the last two weeks, leaving the team still in a building phase.

Gasperini explained the challenges ahead: “We still need to figure out how to best integrate them, perhaps experimenting with new solutions during the season. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do this in the past fifty days because many transfer moves were only finalized recently.”

Looking ahead, the Atalanta manager was cautious about making comparisons to last season’s team. “I can’t say if Atalanta on matchday four will be better than last year’s team,” he concluded, emphasizing the work that lies ahead in molding the new squad.
