Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini expressed optimism and excitement ahead of his team’s Champions League playoff first leg against Club Brugge. Speaking to Sky on the eve of the match, Gasperini shared his thoughts on the Belgian opponents and the challenges of competing in Europe’s elite competition.
“We’ve already had the chance to see Brugge play against Milan and Juventus. They proved their worth on both occasions,” Gasperini noted. He emphasized the unique characteristics of each team in the Champions League, adding, “Brugge also held their ground well in Manchester. They work effectively and with great intensity. Like all teams playing in the Champions League, they’re accustomed to fighting to win their domestic league.”
The Italian coach highlighted Brugge’s offensive style, stating, “Brugge is an attacking team. They never give up on playing, they don’t have rhythm drops. We need to be good at playing an excellent game.”
Reflecting on Atalanta’s journey in the competition, Gasperini said, “We finished ninth in this somewhat peculiar ranking, we had a very good run. Playing in the Champions League is always a great emotion. We play matches that bring us something even in the league.”
Addressing the challenges of a congested fixture list, Gasperini acknowledged the increased risk of injuries but remained upbeat about the benefits of European competition. “Playing so many games in quick succession makes injuries more likely, and we’re suffering from that. But playing Champions League matches isn’t tiring. In fact, it adds more than it takes away; you meet teams that play differently compared to Serie A. The experience outweighs the negative aspects.”
With a touch of humor, Gasperini concluded, “As I said, playing so much increases the level of injuries. Many games are played in quick succession. However, I have a bit of the Highlander in me,” he chuckled, referencing his resilience in the face of a demanding schedule.
