In a shocking turn of events, former Roma and Inter Milan midfielder Radja Nainggolan has been arrested in Brussels as part of an investigation into international drug trafficking. The 36-year-old Belgian footballer was taken into custody on Monday morning, January 27, 2025, by Brussels police in connection with a probe into the importation of cocaine from South America to Europe through the port of Antwerp.
The arrest comes as part of a larger operation targeting organized crime and drug distribution networks in Belgium. Authorities conducted approximately thirty house searches, primarily in the Antwerp province and Brussels area. During one of these searches in Antwerp, police seized Nainggolan’s luxury Smart Brabus car.
Brussels prosecutor Julien Moinil confirmed the arrest and provided some details about the ongoing investigation. The case focuses on the alleged importation of cocaine from South America into Europe via the port of Antwerp and its subsequent distribution throughout Belgium. Due to ongoing interrogations and respecting the principle of presumption of innocence, the prosecutor’s office has refrained from providing further comments at this time.
Nainggolan, who recently made his debut for the futsal team of Lokeren, a second-division Belgian club, was notably absent from training on the day of his arrest. The club issued a brief statement, confirming the player’s absence and stating that he would not be available for their upcoming match against Eupen.
This incident is not Nainggolan’s first brush with controversy. In August 2021, he was stopped by Antwerp police for driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding. Throughout his career, the midfielder has been known for his off-field antics as much as his on-field performances.
Nainggolan’s football career has been illustrious, featuring stints at several top Italian clubs including Piacenza, Cagliari, Roma, Inter Milan, and SPAL. His dynamic playing style and tenacity on the field made him a fan favourite at many of these clubs.
