Former Juventus and Roma midfielder Miralem Pjanic has embarked on a new adventure in Russian football, signing with CSKA Moscow until June 30, 2025. The 33-year-old Bosnian international, who had been a free agent following his stint with FC Sharjah in the UAE, has chosen to continue his career in the Russian Premier League.

Pjanic’s move to CSKA Moscow comes after speculation linking him with a return to Italian football, particularly with Genoa, who were reportedly interested in the midfielder following Malinovskyi’s serious injury in Venice. However, the Russian giants secured his services, adding a wealth of experience to their squad.

The midfielder’s career has seen him play for some of Europe’s top clubs. After starting in France with Metz and gaining international recognition at Olympique Lyonnais, Pjanic made his mark in Italian football. He featured in 185 matches for Roma before moving to Juventus, where he played 178 times, winning four Serie A titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, and a Supercoppa Italiana.

Following his successful spell in Turin, Pjanic’s career took a downturn with less impactful stints at Barcelona and Besiktas. His time in Spain was particularly disappointing, with 30 appearances and no goals for the Catalan club. In the UAE, he managed to score 5 goals in 61 appearances for Sharjah FC.

CSKA Moscow, one of Russia’s most prestigious and successful clubs, is currently coached by Serbian manager Marko Nikolic. The team last won the Russian Premier League in the 2015/2016 season but claimed the Russian Cup in 2022/2023. Pjanic’s addition is expected to bolster their midfield as they aim to reclaim domestic dominance.

In a unique and eye-catching presentation, CSKA Moscow introduced their new signing in spectacular fashion. Pjanic made his entrance to the Luzhniki Stadium on horseback, creating a memorable moment for fans and media alike. This theatrical introduction underlines the club’s excitement about their high-profile acquisition and sets the stage for what they hope will be a successful partnership.
