Following AC Milan’s recent match against Atalanta, head coach Paulo Fonseca expressed his candid thoughts on the officiating and the performance of his team. The match, which ended in a 2-1 defeat for the Rossoneri, saw Milan struggle to maintain their momentum in a challenging Serie A season.
In his post-match interview with Sky Sport, Fonseca reflected on the team’s performance, stating, “I think we lacked the ability to connect with our forwards in the second half. We failed to reach Rafa or Morata effectively. We lost the game due to two set pieces. In the first half, we played exceptionally well, but in the second half, we lost that connection with our attack.”
Fonseca did not shy away from discussing the officiating during the match, particularly regarding the first goal scored by Atalanta’s Charles De Ketelaere. He remarked, “I want to say something else: I have been quiet and have never spoken about refereeing. The first goal was a clear foul. The way the referee managed the game shows a lack of respect for Milan at this moment. I am not afraid to speak the truth. I have always respected referees and understand their job is difficult, but there is a clear lack of respect—not just in this match.”
He continued to emphasize how pivotal moments can change the course of a game: “A situation like this changes everything. There are many errors every week. This referee was involved in a controversial VAR decision against Udinese; you should go back and see what happened there. I was concerned about this match.”
