FIGC Stands Up for Referees: “They Need to be Protected”

Start

In a moment of heightened tension and constant scrutiny towards referees, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has openly rallied behind match officials, aiming to shield them from external and internal pressures, including recent investigative reports.

The FIGC’s vocal support comes amidst mounting attacks on the refereeing community, not only from external sources but also from within, as highlighted by ongoing investigations. The federation’s unwavering stance in defense of the Italian Referees’ Association (AIA) and its members underscores its commitment to upholding the integrity of officiating in Italian football.

As reported by Calciomercato.com, In an unprecedented move, representatives from both sides are set to convene in person in Rome, turning the customary online technical meeting into a face-to-face encounter at the Parco dei Principi hotel, located just steps away from the FIGC headquarters on via Allegri. The initiative, proposed by referee designator Gianluca Rocchi, indicates a proactive effort to address concerns and foster dialogue between stakeholders, with additional gatherings planned during the upcoming international break at Coverciano.

Referees, albeit unwittingly, have found themselves at the center of a political storm between the Serie A League and the FIGC. Amidst rumblings of potential secession from the federation led by club presidents, notably spearheaded by Lazio’s president Claudio Lotito, discussions have even broached the idea of entrusting officiating responsibilities to a third-party entity. FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, recognizing the pivotal role referees play in driving reforms and decision-making within the federation, has firmly aligned himself with the officiating community. Under the banner of “I stand with you,” Gravina reaffirms his unwavering support for referees, emphasizing their indispensable contribution to the sport and rebuffing attempts to undermine their authority.
