Fenerbahçe linked with Roma’s Mario Hermoso

Start

Mario Hermoso’s stint at Roma has been far from stellar since his arrival as a free agent in early September. The Spanish defender has struggled to make a positive impact, being implicated in several goals conceded by the Giallorossi, including notable lapses against Genoa and Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia. Recently returning from a month-long muscle injury, Hermoso has found himself in the starting lineup only due to Hummels’ absence, with the latter expected to reclaim his position soon.

Hermoso’s future at Roma appears uncertain, with reports from Turkey suggesting a potential move to Fenerbahçe. The Turkish club’s sporting director is reportedly planning a trip to Italy, possibly to discuss the transfer. However, Hermoso is said to prefer a return to Spain, where his family still resides. It’s worth noting that he previously declined an offer from Galatasaray last summer, indicating a reluctance to move to Turkey.

Roma’s sporting director, Ghisolfi, is actively working on reinforcing the team’s defense. With only four central defenders available, the situation has become critical, forcing the team to use Celik as a makeshift center-back in recent matches. Manager Ranieri has hinted at potential new signings, acknowledging the need for defensive reinforcements without making false promises to fans.

Among the potential targets are Marco Di Cesare, the Argentine defender from Racing, who is on Roma’s radar despite competition from Inter Milan for his signature. Another name being considered is Luiz Felipe, the former Lazio player who is currently a free agent and also on Napoli’s list of potential recruits.

Hermoso’s statistics this season have been disappointing. Among Roma’s central defenders, he ranks lowest in intercepted balls, tackles won, and successful duels. His performance has been further overshadowed by Hummels’ rise to prominence, with Ranieri describing the latter as indispensable to the team. The Spanish defender’s Roma career hit a low point with his red card in the disastrous 5-1 defeat against Fiorentina, further complicating his position within the squad.
