Empoli sporting director Gemmi reflects on challenging transfer window

Start

Empoli’s Sporting Director Roberto Gemmi recently addressed the media in a press conference, discussing the club’s transfer activities and the upcoming season. Gemmi provided insights into the challenges faced during the transfer window and the club’s strategic decisions.

Regarding the recently concluded transfer market, Gemmi stated, “This transfer window was complicated, and it will only become more so as time passes. I struggle to understand why it needs to last so long; we all recognize it’s not ideal, but we don’t truly comprehend the reason. Nevertheless, we conducted our business following the objectives that the manager and I had in mind. However, I continue to reflect on what we weren’t able to accomplish.”

On player departures, Gemmi explained, “There wasn’t a single operation that left me with regret. You have many ideas, you explore them, but sometimes you can’t secure that player. Regarding outgoing transfers, they were determined by specific requests from players wanting a change of scenery, and we assigned a value to each operation.”

Gemmi discussed new signings Anjorin and De Sciglio: “We had been closely monitoring Anjorin and decided to bring him to Empoli on a permanent basis, leveraging our good relationships with a major club. Despite impressing in early training sessions, we remain calm, as pre-season football requires time and patience. As for De Sciglio, we were looking for an experienced player who could contribute in the dressing room and cover various positions on the field.”

The sporting director also addressed the situation of young talent Fazzini: “He attracted attention in the market, with more than just inquiries, but together with the president, we decided to retain him. I consider him a real ‘acquisition’ for the team because Empoli is the ideal environment to allow him to grow and improve further.”

On Caputo’s departure, Gemmi expressed gratitude: “I take this opportunity to thank him for his great professionalism. He made an important contribution in the dressing room. In our discussions, I had explained to him how many forwards we wanted to add, and he knew he would have to share the offensive department. He still feels capable of being a protagonist, and he can be. We therefore decided, in a natural way, to terminate the contract.”
