Former AC Milan goalkeeper Nelson Dida has expressed confidence in the club’s ability to bounce back and compete for top honors, while also praising current shot-stopper Mike Maignan as potentially the world’s best.

Speaking at a charity padel tournament in Milan, Dida shared his thoughts on the team’s recent performance and future prospects. “It was an important performance, in a season that has had its ups and downs,” he said, referring to Milan’s convincing win against Empoli. “I seem to see more confidence and better communication between the coaching staff and the players. I hope this growth continues and that the results keep improving.”

When asked about Milan’s title chances, Dida urged patience and focus. “Now it’s useless to look at the standings: we must think game by game, point by point. It’s necessary to find that consistency of performance that has been lacking so far, but I’m optimistic about this aspect. The defensive phase is growing, and Milan will return to the top, as the tradition of this club demands. The Rossoneri will also be protagonists in the Champions League and Coppa Italia.”

While acknowledging Napoli and Inter as the strongest teams currently, Dida believes Milan can climb back up the table. He also emphasized the importance of Rafael Leão’s form, stating, “If Rafa is focused and smiling, he can really make a difference. He’s a fundamental player for the team, and it’s important that he feels the confidence in him.”

Dida had high praise for midfielder Tijjani Reijnders, calling him “a great midfielder, one of the best around. He does everything well and is also contributing nicely in the scoring phase.”

On the topic of Mike Maignan, Dida was unequivocal in his assessment. “I have no doubts about Mike because I’ve trained him, and I’m convinced he’ll become the strongest in the world. He’s incredibly strong between the posts, and Fonseca’s style of play, which involves him even more, will enhance his skill with his feet.” Dida strongly advised Maignan to renew his contract with Milan, stating, “He must stay, we can’t lose him!”

Regarding coach Paulo Fonseca, Dida sees positive signs. “The team is assimilating his style of play, and it seems to me that the players are going to press the opponents higher up the pitch. Fonseca’s work is evident.”

Looking ahead to Milan’s upcoming match against Atalanta, Dida views it as an opportunity for the team to confirm their growth. “It will be tough against Atalanta, but I have faith,” he concluded, reaffirming his support for Milan’s long-term success.
