Di Lorenzo: ‘It’s strange to think I’ll follow Maradona winning the title with Napoli’

Start

Giovanni Di Lorenzo says it will be ‘strange’ to think that he will lift the Scudetto as Napoli captain after Diego Maradona. The Partenopei are within touching distance of the Serie A title after a 1-0 win in Turin against Juventus took them just a few points away from the Scudetto. Speaking with DAZN (as quoted by TMW), Di Lorenzo shared the emotions the players are going through after such an important win and why the disappointment of losing in the Champions League helped motivate them to see out the season:

“It’s a very important victory for us, it brings us closer to our goal, to our dream. Winning here is never easy, we are all happy.”

What have the last four days been like?

“We wanted to go through an important competition. We played it on a level playing field with Milan, we are sorry to have gone out that way but we came out with our heads held high. After that game we immediately started preparing for this one, great teams do that, they look at what they have to do and not what happened. Tonight we showed that we are a great team.”

How did Napoli become so strong? Tonight those who came in from the bench made a difference

“This year the quality of the subs has been a constant, in every game they have given us a big hand. With the five changes you can change the game and those who come in make a really incredible contribution. It’s a victory that brings us closer to our goal, it’s a journey that started some time ago and now we are savouring it..”

Would you be okay on Sunday celebrating in front of the TV? You’ll have to be the one raising the Cup

“It makes me a little strange to think about being the captain of Napoli after Maradona raising the Scudetto, it will be incredible. I, like all my teammates, are enjoying these victories after a positive path since the beginning of the year.”
